The story of Henfield Leisure Centre

The construction of Henfield Leisure Centre was funded by a grant of £300,000 from Horsham District Council (HDC). This grant was made possible by the sale of a plot of land at Broadbridge Heath to Tesco Ltd. in the 1980s. This sale also funded the construction of Storrington and Upper Beeding Leisure Centres.

Henfield Parish Council (HPC) were instructed to use the grant from HDC to build a Leisure Centre with the stipulation that nothing could be added to the rates (council tax) to fund the running of it. HPC invited interested individuals to form a Charitable Trust to build and run the Leisure Centre.

Henfield and District Sports Association (HDSA) was formed under the leadership of Sheila Corp with input from two Parish Councillors and after much research and a generous donation of the land by Peter Gander, construction began and the Leisure Centre opened in 1990.

Since 1990 there have been three extension projects and several rennovation projects.

In 2014 Henfield Leisure Centre became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and changed the name of the centre from Henfield and District Sports Association to Henfield Leisure Centre. The centre has continued to be self-funding and independent.

The Henfield & District Sports Centre was officially opened to the public on Sunday 29 July 1990.

The Henfield and District Sports Centre was officially opened by BBC South sports journalist John Hughes and was witnessed by around two thousand visitors from throughout the district together with one hundred VIPs from around the region. The introduction to the Official Souvenir Programme read as follows…

“On behalf of the Association, I am delighted to welcome all visitors to this prestigious venue on the occasion of the official opening.

We have been able to offer today an exciting menu of sporting activity and hope that, whether participating, officiating or just spectating, the day will be memorable for one and all.

As members of the Association alreday know, the centre is the fruit of many years hard work by many individuals, organisations, authorities and local bodies, all of whom deserve a special mention but space precludes this. I thatnk each and every one of them.”

Sheila Corp, President

“It is with pride I write this opening message because from what seemed an enormous and sometimes impossible task four years ago for a parish council to undertake, our completed Henfield and District Sports Centre today bears witness to an all round endeavour and dedication of many in our local community to make this building possible.

With so many people involved, to start mentioning individuals by name would be quite a task, but our grateful and sincere thanks go to those who have worked so hard for many months, even years to make this dream become a reality, long will their endeavours be applauded by generations of sports men and women.

To Horsham District Council we gratefully acknowldge their generous donation of £435,000 which has not only enabled us to build the complex but also to purchase four acres of extra land to enhance our sports facilities at Kings Field. Likewise, the technical guidance from Horsham District Council Officers has been much appreciated.

Confined within a strict budget, our professional team have continually faced the challenge of rising costs and it is important to record how endebted we are to our local builders Messrs. Vinall for generously absorbing many of the additional extras both in labour and materials to keep costs within our financial target. Therefore, to our professional team, the architect, quantity surveyor, mechanical, structural and electrical engineers and our builder, thank you for a project well done.

May I, on behalf of Henfield Parish Council, wish all who use the Sports Centre many happy hours of healthy exercise, relaxation and socialising in this mutually beneficial complex. To the Henfield and District Sports Association goes our warmest wishes for a very successful management.

All of us can be justly proud of the fine achievement.”
